The PEI Motorcycle Stage 2 License

As part of the Prince Edward Island graduated motorcycle license program, you become eligible for a PEI motorcycle Stage 2 license after completing the required time with a PEI motorcycle learners license. In order to actually move to the PEI Motorcycle Stage 2 License level, you will need to pass a motorcycle road test that ensures you are comfortable handling a motorcycle in any road situation and can drive independently in a safe manner. Don't forget, anytime you drive a motorcycle, you must have the appropriate PEI motorcycle insurance in place, as well as registration documents for the bike you are operating.

How to Get the PEI Motorcycle Stage 2 License

Learner Licence Holder

You need to have held a PEI motorcycle learner licence for at least 1 year (275 days with Driver Education) to apply for a PEI Motorcycle Stage 2 License.

Study The PEI Driver's Handbook

Even though the PEI Driver's Handbook is theoretical learning, it's a good idea to brush up on the basics, so you remember all the PEI road signs and rules of the road when you're doing the PEI Class 6 road test. Book Your Class 6 Road Test

You must book your Class 6 road test appointment with your local Access PEI office.

Practice Motorcycle Riding

Spend a lot of time practicing motorcycle riding skills before you Class 6 road test.

  • Starting and stopping your motorcycle
  • Starting on a hill
  • Shifting Gears
  • Downshifting
  • Shifting in a turn
  • Navigating turns and corners
  • Braking and stopping
  • Maintaining correct lane position

Class 6 Road Test

The Class 6 road test will involve you driving a motorcycle through a directed route followed by an examiner in another vehicle. You will be asked to demonstrate that all the controls on the motorcycle are working before the test begins, so make sure you know where all the major controls are (brakes, headlight, rear lamp and brake light etc).

Arrive Early

Aim to arrive at least 15-20 minutes before your scheduled PEI Class 6 road test appointment.

Documents to Bring

  • Motorcycle learner licence
  • Valid identification ex. birth certificate, immigration documents etc
  • Proof of PEI residency
  • Valid insurance and registration documents for the motorcycle you will be taking the test on

Applicable Fees

Check all and any applicable test fees.

Minimum Licence Holding Period

You must remain at the Stage 2 license stage for at least 1 year. If you accumulate more than 6 demerit points during the 1-year time period, your licence will be suspended, followed by a 1-year probation period and you will re-start the waiting period to get your PEI Motorcycle Novice Stage 3 License.

Display G Sign

A Stage 2 rider must display a G (graduated) decal on the back of his/her motorcycle helmet when driving.

No Alcohol

You BAC level must always be at zero when operating a motorcycle in PEI.

No Handheld Devices

You cannot use a cell phone or any hand-held devices when operating a motorcycle.

Passenger Restrictions

You are restricted to carrying 1 passenger.

Restricted Nighttime Riding

You cannot drive between the hours of 1 am and 5 am unless you receive an exception for work purposes or are accompanied by someone with a qualified PEI driving license.
