The Town of Newmarket has a rich and colourful history, with its location on the Holland River making it an obvious resting area on a route of travel between Lake Simcoe and Lake Ontario. The first European settlers were Quakers who established farming communities and businesses like a mill, tannery and distillery in the area. The community was involved in the War of 1812, as well as the Rebellions of 1837–1838, with Rebel leader William Lyon Mackenzie giving his first political speech there. But it was the railways that brought rapid growth to the region. Newmarket was first incorporated as a village in 1857 and became a bustling market town when the Metropolitan Street Railway arrived in 1899. Today, Newmarket is primarily a residential area and part of the Greater Toronto Area. Source: Wikipedia - Newmarket.
