Everything You Need to Know About the Manitoba Class 5I Road Test

Learning how to drive can be a complicated process. In order to make that process as smooth as possible, we've assembled everything you need to know, from driving tips to exactly what you should expect on your Manitoba Class 5 intermediate license road test.

5L licence holder

You can take your Class 5 road test after having held a 5L licence or learner licence for at least 9 months.

Book Your Road Test

Your road test eligibility date is a minimum of nine months after obtaining your Manitoba learners license. You can book your road test appointment 60 days in advance of this eligibility date and must do so through your preferred Autopac Manitoba insurance agent.

Practice Driving

You should make use of the 9-month wait period between the 5L and the class 5 road test to practice key driving skills with a supervising driver.

Pre-trip Introduction and Checks

Before the test begins you will be introduced to your driver examiner, and he/she will go over a few key items with you:

  • The driver examiner will review your documents and ask you to sign the road test document
  • The structure of the test will be explained and you will be given an opportunity to ask any questions
  • A vehicle safety check will be completed to ensure your vehicle meets safety standards. Make sure you review the criteria that deem a vehicle safe before arriving at the test location

Road Test

The actual Manitoba Class 5 intermediate license test is designed to assess your ability to drive a car safely and confidently. Some of the main areas you should expect to be tested on are:

  • Demonstrating your vehicles basic operating features
  • Strong capability to control your vehicle when starting, stopping, steering, shifting, signaling, backing, parking and turning
  • The ability to parallel park within the 1.85 m to 7.5 m space in four minutes or three attempts
  • The ability to park within 18 inches (or 46 cm) from the curb without going over it or hitting anything
  • Demonstrating a good knowledge of Manitoba road signs and road rules
  • The ability to observe all road conditions, correct usage of mirrors, identification of blind spots and the ability to anticipate changing traffic patterns

Once the test is complete, the driver examiner will explain your results and go over any areas you need to improve in.

Cancelling or Rescheduling

If you need to cancel or reschedule for any reason, make sure you do it well in advance to avoid losing your road test fee.

Vehicle Safety Check

You have to make sure your vehicle meets all the safety requirements, otherwise you run the risk of not being allowed to take the class 5 road test

Arrive Early

To give yourself time to check in and get settled before the road test, it's recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier than your road test appointment time

Vision Aids

If you need glasses or contacts to drive, make sure you take them along.

Valid Prior Licence

Make sure you bring along your valid, unexpired class 5L or 5A licence

Registration Documentation

You will need to show a valid registration certificate for the vehicle you will be attempting the test with. Make sure the registration is current, including both licence plates, otherwise your road test could be cancelled.

Applicable Fees

It's always a good idea to review the Manitoba licensing fee structure so you are not surprised on your test day

Test Re-takes

If you fail your Class 5 road test, you will need to wait for 14 days before you can retake the test. If you have four unsuccessful road test attempts, you will be required to take a minimum 2-hour professional driving instruction course from a Manitoba Public Insurance accredited driving school.  After completion of the two hours, you will be allowed to book your fifth road test.

Minimum Licence Holding Period

One you've completed a minimum of 15 months at the intermediate Manitoba licensing stage, you will automatically be graduated to a full Class 5F licence.

No Alcohol

At the Manitoba Class 5 intermediate license stage, you must maintain a blood alcohol level of zero at all times

Passenger Limits

  • 5am to midnight - One passenger in the front seat and additional passengers in the back seat (s) limited to the number of functioning seat belts
  • Midnight to 5 am - One passenger, or if accompanied by a supervising driver additional passengers in the back seat (s) limited to the number of functioning seat belts
