Choose the appropriate Alberta motorcycle licence level to get started
The process of getting through the Alberta graduated motorcycle license system is slightly different depending on your previous driver licensing history. The path for new drivers and experienced drivers alike, focuses on teaching aspiring Alberta motorbike license holders the essential motorcycle driving skills, and how to be a responsible rider in any road situation or weather condition. Remember, being a responsible rider includes having adequate Alberta motorcycle insurance and all other required documentation as well.
Completely New Rider: Get a 7L Licence, pass a motorcycle knowledge test, pass a Class 6 road test, ride 2 years with a Class 6-GDL and then get your Class 6 Licence
Experienced Driver: If you have Class 7L or 5 Licence then pass a motorcycle knowledge test and a Class 6 road test to get your Class 6 Licence
The Alberta learners license builds foundational knowledge of what is expected when driving a car or motorcycle on Alberta's roads. Being able to learn the associated information in the Alberta drivers guide and demonstrating understanding of that information by successfully passing the class 7 knowledge test is a key requirement at this Alberta motorcycle license stage. Use our free Alberta Class 7 practice tests and Alberta motorcycle practice test series to quickly build your knowledge and confidence for the motorcycle written test Alberta requires.
Pass a knowledge test and a vision test to get your Class 7L licence

The way the Alberta graduated motorcycle license program works, is that both new and experienced drivers are required to pass the class 6 knowledge test and class 6 road test at this level. The key difference between the two is that new drivers will enter the Alberta Class 6 GDL licence level upon successful completion of the Class 6 knowledge test and Class 6 road test, and must remain at that level for a minimum of 2 years. Experienced passenger vehicle drivers who already hold a Class 5 licence can immediately get the full motorcycle license Alberta offers once they complete the knowledge test and class 6 road test.
Class 7L (12 months) or Class 5 + Motorcycle Knowledge Test + Class 6 Road Test → Class 6 GDL
*If you are an experienced driver then skip this stage.
